29 students took part in a Science-Art project with the Science Museum. The final stage of their project is when they will see their work (in photographic format) placed in an exhibition at the Museum and speak to members of the public and press about their work. This is what the students said about their piece:
Under pressure: The Wilting Tree
While designing our piece we thought about how much our earth is dependent on the natural world especially trees. We decided to show this by having a model earth being supported by a weak dying tree. Initially we wanted to have the model tree encompassed in to the tree, like a ball in a cup with the branches curving upwards to hold the earth. However when we started making the structure of the tree, we found this difficult to do. Nevertheless, the metaphor is still there. Tree, or the natural world, is dying under the burden of mankind on earth. This is shown in the tilting position of the tree which has withered leaves to show it is slowly decaying. In essence we wanted to represent how we are destroying the one thing that is keeping us alive and what a weight we are to the rest of life on this planet.
The earth is a collage of natural disasters, whirlpools for the oceans and red fiery pieces for the land. This is to demonstrate that as a result of our actions on earth, such as being careless in how we use our resources, we are changing temperatures on earth leading to the formation of many natural disasters which is further damaging the earth. Lastly, we have also used several poems and used them to border the different continents to exemplify that we are affecting the environment as these powerful poems highlight the extensive harm we are doing to our environment.
