Girls' Empowerment Day
30/06/2010

Girls Empowerment Day, Burgess Park, Tuesday 29th June

As part of the National Schools Sport Week, 23 Year 10 Girls from Bacons College took part in a Girls Empowerment Day.

The day consisted of taster sessions in sports which are not traditionally offered to girls within the school curriculum such as Cricket, Football, Boxing and Tennis. The sessions were led by Southwark Community Coaches who also gave pupils information about Local sports Clubs and how to access them. Throughout the day girls were encouraged to work and socialise with girls from different schools and develop communication skills. Also present were two professional female athletes who gave the girls a motivational speech about how to get into & achieve in sport. The first was Olympic Triple Jumper, Michelle Robinson (Nee Griffith), followed by Ebony Rainford-Brent, a Women’s England Cricketer.

The girls were taught that sport can be used to motivate them to achieve in all aspects of life and the skills which are inherent to sports performers such as determination and focus can help them in whatever they choose to do.
Following the taster sessions a number of girls committed to attend a variety of different sporting clubs, helping to fulfil our aim of lifelong participation within sport for as many young people as possible. The girls have also requested for more of these types of sports to be included in lessons, helping them to have a wider access to the curriculum and challenge gender stereotypes.
The Event was organised by the Schools Sports Partnership Team based at Bacons College, as have numerous other events held throughout the Borough, not only during National School Sports Week but also over the school year. These events help pupils of all ages have a wider access to sports, therefore raising participation, enjoyment and achievement.
